SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Art-Work: Balance"
DESCRIPTION:Organized by ABC No Rio with The Clemente\nArt-Work: Balance \nOn View: May 29 – July 12\, 2026 \nWhere: 4th Floor @ The Clemente \nOrganized by: ABC No Rio \nOpening Reception: Friday\, May 29 @ 6-8pm \nCurator: Arthur Polendo \nParticipating Artists: To be announced soon! \nArt-Work: Balance explores the often invisible tension between creative practice and the jobs artists take on to support their practice. Featuring works across mediums\, the exhibition reveals how labor outside the studio—whether inspiring\, exhausting\, or intrusive—shapes the artist’s identity\, process\, and output. The pieces do not directly depict these jobs but instead respond to the lived reality of navigating survival and self-expression. This exhibition invites viewers to consider the cost\, resilience\, and ingenuity behind sustaining an artistic life. \n— \nThe LES has a long history of labor movements\, union organizing\, sweat equity\, and arts work.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: The Gates of Tompkins
DESCRIPTION:Organized by the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space\nThe Gates of Tompkins exhibit\, which is at the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space in NYC\, will open on Thursday\, May 28th at 4:00pm. It will be open to the public weekly on Friday\, Saturday\, and Sunday from 12-5pm until June 21st. \nAfter a financial crisis that affected New York City in the 70s and 80s \, Lower East Side residents took back their neighborhood\, fixed up buildings\, and reclaimed the gardens\, creating a sustainable\, community way of life. Tompkins Square Park became an amazing example of the community’s vibrance\, cultivating music\, art\, and theater. However\, once the city returned to a stronger financial position\, authorities sought to take back community housing\, gardens\, and this new sustainable way of life and undermine these community-based projects. The neighborhood residents put up a fight to stop the gentrification\, and Tompkins Square Park became a battleground. A protest encampment was established in the park\, and what is known as the Tompkins Square Park Riots went on for several years. Eventually\, after using a lot of violence\, the city closed the park in 1991 and destroyed the bandshell. When they reopened the park\, it was re-designed in a way that discouraged the free exchange of art\, music\, and public assembly. It has been that way ever since–fences everywhere you look. With this Redesign initiative\, we hope to be able to put pressure on the Parks Department to re-design it in a way that maximizes community engagement and brings back the creative spirit of the neighborhood.

SUMMARY:Archives in Motion
DESCRIPTION:Organized by the New School with Performance Project @ University Settlement\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nArchives in Motion is a site-specific performance created in partnership with University Settlement and staged in their historic gymnasium—one of the first basketball courts in the United States. \nLed by faculty member Irina Kruzhilina\, the project brings together students from The New School to engage with the physical\, historical\, and social layers of the site. Drawing from materials found in the University Settlement archives\, the performance emerges through a process of research\, improvisation\, and collective creation. \nFounded in 1886\, University Settlement is the first settlement house in the United States and remains one of New York City’s largest social-service and community-support organizations. \nArchives in Motion explores how meaning is constructed from archival fragments—what archives preserve and what they leave out. Rather than presenting a complete narrative\, the work stages the act of reading\, assembling\, and interpreting archival materials\, bringing them into the present through the bodies and voices of performers in the very space where these histories unfolded. The result is a performance that activates the archive in real time\, placing past and present\, document and body\, in dialogue. \nThe project also carries a historical connection to The New School: David Mannes\, founder of the Mannes School of Music\, once taught at the Settlement. A record recently uncovered in the archives notes\,“There is a string quartet class every Thursday evening in charge of Mr. David Mannes.” \n  \n*Site-specific projects are an immersive activation of the chosen space and how students engage with and respond to it. \n \nThe project includes an audio walking tour through the stairwells. Some areas of the space can only be reached by stairs and are therefore not wheelchair accessible. \n \nTo experience this immersive event\, you will need: \n–A smartphone with the ability to scan a QR code for the moving audio tour \n–Earphones/headphones to connect to your phone \n–Willingness to walk several flights of stairs and stand for an extended period of time \n   \n*Please note\, the Friday evening showing is the final dress rehearsal/preview. \n  \nABOUT SITE SPECIFIC PROJECTS \nSite Specific provides students with a practical appreciation of the processes and methodologies associated with the development\, rehearsal\, and production of site-based performances. Students engage in performative activities in response to the physical\, historical\, and social layers of the chosen site\, as well as various thematic\, textual\, and visual sources. These responses form the basis of improvisational\, visual\, and multimedia content for a devised site-based performance. While faculty provide overarching themes\, creative prompts\, artistic provocations\, and technical guidance\, students take primary responsibility for creating and executing the performance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by the College of Performing Arts at The New School.
