Poetry Project >> Photos from New Year’s Day Marathons & Symposiums: 1979 – 2003
The first New Year’s Day Marathon reading took place in 1974, and since then has become a crucial neighborhood tradition, having featured performances by Arthur Russell, Yoko Ono, Kathy Acker, Eileen Myles, Amiri Baraka, Gordon Matta Clark, as well as new readers every year. The Annual New Year’s Day Marathon Reading is The Poetry Project’s biggest event of the year, featuring in addition to the 140+ performances a volunteer-run bookstore with titles donated by over 50 small presses and a volunteer-run kitchen serving delicious food donated by various neighborhood restaurants. The Annual New Year’s Day Marathon gives us a chance to start the year off together, celebrating our community and the work we all believe in.
Most of the photos in this archive gallery were taken at the New Year’s Marathon Readings or at the Symposiums. Dates, performers, and photographers are identified when known.
