The East Village Building Blocks online resource provides information about 2,200 properties in the East Village, including each building’s date of construction, original architect, original use, and links to additional documents. This map was ten years in the making and offers not just a great resource for research, but also a range of tours that guide you through several of the histories that have converged in the neighborhood. The tours allow you to explore the sites associated with developments such as the Yiddish Rialto, Kleindeutschland, freed Black settlements, Little Ukraine, Loisaida, punk rock, and the squats movement, among many others. Together, these sites and tours tell the story of the shifting ethnic, cultural, and commercial tides of the East Village and New York City over two centuries. East Village Building Blocks also invites the public to share images, artwork, memories, and histories related to any East Village site. That way, everyone can collaborate in the telling of the neighborhood’s story.
